Authorities at Lagos airport apprehend 14 individuals suspected of destructive behavior.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has taken 14 suspected vandals into custody at the Terminal One construction site of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, in Lagos.

The arrest was announced by Mr Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, in a statement released on Tuesday in Lagos, revealing that the suspects were apprehended on Monday at approximately 6.00 p.m.

According to Agbebire, the successful apprehension of the suspects was made possible through a collaborative effort between FAAN's security team and the Joint Military Task Force, JMTF, as well as other security agencies stationed at the airport.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects had gained unauthorized access to the construction site by posing as legitimate construction personnel, but their attempt was thwarted by the vigilance and swift intervention of FAAN security operatives and their partners.

The suspects were found in possession of vandalized materials, including copper wires and iron components, which had been removed from the construction site, and were subsequently handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.

Agbebire emphasized that this operation highlights FAAN's commitment to maintaining a robust and proactive security framework, as well as its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of criminal activity targeting critical aviation infrastructure.

FAAN remains dedicated to protecting airport assets and ensuring the safety and integrity of ongoing development projects across the country, and continues to enhance its surveillance and access control systems, as well as inter-agency collaboration to deter and respond to security threats.

The authority is urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or movements within and around airport areas to the relevant security agencies.

Further investigations have revealed that the 14 suspected vandals have been transferred to the Beesam Divisional Police.
