Authorities apprehend individual suspected of pilfering multiple bikes over a fortnight in Cross River

A 30-year-old man, Kelvin, has been taken into custody in Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, on suspicion of stealing seven motorcycles over a two-week period.

The arrest came after a string of motorcycle thefts occurred in the area, with residents claiming Kelvin exploited crowded burial gatherings to carry out the crimes without being noticed.

According to sources, Kelvin would often attend burial events, where he would secretly tamper with motorcycle ignitions before making off with the bikes during moments of distraction.

A motorcycle operator, Mr. Odey Hope, stated that Kelvin was believed to be responsible for several recent motorcycle disappearances in the community, with the suspect admitting to stealing seven bikes in the last two weeks.

Mr. Odey Hope described Kelvin as a serial motorcycle thief who targeted burial venues during wake-keep ceremonies, moving from one event to another to carry out his crimes.

The suspect allegedly sold the stolen motorcycles in nearby villages at low prices, taking advantage of his knowledge of burial schedules to plan his thefts.

It was also claimed that Kelvin was not a local resident, but rather from a neighbouring area, which allowed him to blend in and stay informed about upcoming burial events.

Kelvin allegedly confessed to selling the stolen motorcycles at reduced prices in nearby communities, although some of his claims, including those related to a domestic dispute, have not been verified.

Following his arrest, Kelvin was transferred to the Divisional Police Station in Okpoma for further investigation and possible prosecution.
