ASUU, SSANU, NASU suspend strike in Ondo varsities

AKURE — Academic and non-academic staff unions in state-owned universities in Ondo State have suspended their four-week-old strike, directing members to resume work on Tuesday, September 29.

The affected institutions are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, OAUSTECH; and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, UNIMED.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued on Monday in Akure by the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions, JAC-ODSTI.

The statement was signed by the committee’s Chairman, Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni, and Secretary, Comrade Kunle Akinwonmi.

According to the committee, the decision followed an intervention by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa which addressed the core issues that led to the industrial action.

“Following the financial intervention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the crisis that led to an indefinite strike on Sept. 2, 2026, we wish to inform the general public that the indefinite strike is hereby suspended with effect from Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026,” the statement said.

The committee commended Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, for their roles in resolving the dispute.

The unions, however, appealed to the managements of the affected institutions to urgently address the non-financial aspects of the Federal Government/unions agreement to prevent future industrial disputes.

Confirming the development in a telephone interview with NAN on Monday, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, AAUA branch, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the strike had been suspended.

NAN recalls that the state-owned tertiary institutions were shut down in early September following disputes over the non-implementation of the Federal Government-varsity unions wage structure, CONUASS, subvention arrears and staff welfare issues.
