ASUU-FUK begins non-compliance action over salary reduction

GOMBE — The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Federal University Kashere, FUK, Branch has commenced an Active Non-Compliance, ANC, action over what it described as the unlawful reduction of members’ salaries by the Federal Government.

The union said the action followed a directive from its National Executive Council, NEC, after efforts to resolve the dispute through the university management failed to yield the desired result.

In a statement signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr Salihu Adam Jidda, and made available to journalists in Gombe on Friday night, ASUU-FUK said the decision was taken at an emergency branch congress held on August 13, 2026.

The union recalled that the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement was implemented across universities in January 2026 following a Federal Government circular.

It, however, alleged that the salaries of its members were reduced in July 2026, describing the development as a breach of the agreement.

According to the union, the salary reduction had subjected academic staff to severe hardship and affected their ability to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

The statement said the branch had earlier engaged the Vice-Chancellor through written communications and physical meetings in an effort to secure intervention and resolve the matter.

It added that the engagements failed to produce a solution, prompting the branch to activate the NEC directive on ANC.

“Consequently, and in line with directives issued by the National Executive Council, our branch has been placed among those required to activate Active Non-Compliance, a resolution of the pre-NEC meeting in Benin in 2025,” the statement said.

The union said its members would, with effect from August 13, withdraw from teaching and other specified academic and administrative duties until the dispute was resolved.

The affected activities include teaching, examination preparation and marking, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research, as well as attendance and participation in statutory university meetings and committees.

Members were also directed to suspend other official academic and administrative engagements, which the union said would constitute anti-union activities if undertaken during the period of the action.

ASUU-FUK described the action as “regrettable but necessary”, saying it was intended to compel the Federal Government to honour the 2025 agreement and restore the full salaries of affected members.

The union, however, said it remained committed to the welfare of students and the integrity of the university, urging the Federal Government and university management to expedite efforts to resolve the dispute.

It also appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to communicate its position to relevant university organs and refrain from victimising members for exercising what it described as their legitimate trade union rights.

The union expressed hope that a just and timely resolution would be reached to enable its members resume normal academic duties.
