Aston Villa stumble as Fulham's continental ambitions remain on track

Aston Villa's bid to rise to third in the Premier League was thwarted on Saturday, as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Fulham, thereby keeping Marco Silva's team in the running for European competition.

The decisive goal was scored by Ryan Sessegnon just before half-time, after Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins had earlier come close to breaking the deadlock for Villa.

The outcome leaves Villa with 58 points, level with third-placed Manchester United, albeit having played one more game, and Unai Emery's team remains on track to secure a top-five finish, which would guarantee a Champions League spot next season.

Fulham, meanwhile, have climbed to 10th place, with 48 points, drawing level with neighbours Chelsea and trailing sixth-placed Brighton by just two points in the battle for European qualification.

The London club last participated in European competition in 2011, and their victory has rekindled their hopes of returning to the continental stage.

About 10 minutes prior to Sessegnon's goal, Villa had opportunities to take the lead, with Rogers firing wide in the 34th minute after a penetrating run across the penalty area, and Watkins also missing the target shortly afterwards.

The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute, when Sessegnon converted the chance after Emiliano Martinez had made a smart parry to deny a Sasa Lukic header.

Watkins, in fine form, squandered a chance to equalize on the hour mark, blazing over the bar when well-placed, prompting an animated reaction from Emery on the sidelines.

Fulham thought they had doubled their lead midway through the second half, but Timothy Castagne's headed goal was disallowed by referee Michael Oliver, who deemed that Martinez had been impeded.

Emery made four substitutions in a bid to inject creativity into his team, but ultimately to no avail, as Fulham held firm to secure the win.

Villa will now shift their focus to the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest, scheduled for Thursday.
