Assailants of Don Pedro Obaseki offer apology

Drama unfolded on Tuesday at the residence of media and entertainment personality Don Pedro Obaseki, as a group of individuals, suspected to be among those who assaulted him a few months prior, arrived to apologize for their actions, which were reportedly sparked by Obaseki's alleged criticisms of the Benin monarchy.

Leading the group was Osaze Adun, also known as Kapuepue, who expressed remorse for his role in the incident and assured that such an event would never occur again, while also acknowledging Obaseki's efforts in promoting the interests of the Benin nation and stressing that he is not an enemy of the Palace.

Obaseki had been assaulted on Sunday, 28th December 2025, at Uwa Primary School in Benin, but he revealed that he has forgiven his attackers, citing the trauma he experienced as a result of the incident.

Despite the initial trauma, Obaseki stated that he has chosen to put the matter behind him, having been appealed to by various parties, and now seeks to move forward, as evidenced by his decision to forgive his assailants.

According to Obaseki, the events of 28th December are well-known, and it has been almost four months since the incident occurred, during which time he and his family have been deeply affected, but he has come to realize that forgiveness is essential.

Obaseki referenced a Benin proverb, which states that only the leopard's cob can lick the leopard's underside, implying that as an Edo man and an Obaseki, he is committed to making amends and reaffirming his loyalty to the Edo people.

He expressed his intention to use this experience as an affirmation of his commitment to the Edo people, and to thank his close friends and family for their support, acknowledging that his family has a long history and did not emerge in isolation.

Obaseki noted that the mother of one of his assailants, Kapuepue, is also a member of his family, highlighting the complexities of the situation and the need for reconciliation.

The Obaseki clan has reportedly been engaged in discussions to address the matter, and Obaseki has emphasized the importance of moving forward, having been deeply traumatized by the assault, which occurred after he had played 90 minutes of football and was subsequently forced to walk several kilometers.

Obaseki attributed his survival of the ordeal to the grace of God, and emphasized that he is not a polarizing figure in the state, but rather a unifying presence who can interact with individuals from various political parties without issue.

As the chieftain of the ADC, Obaseki stated that he prioritizes his Edo heritage above his party affiliation, and is committed to sacrificing his personal interests for the benefit of the Edo people, underscoring the paramount importance of his Edo identity.
