Armed assailants fatally shoot member of local security group in new wave of violence in Plateau region

A vigilante member has been killed in a fresh attack on Wereng-Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victim, identified as Mangai Musa, 43, was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen on Tuesday night.

A resident of the community, Tok Abel, told Vanguard that the gunmen stormed the area at about 10 p.m. and opened fire, killing the vigilante member before fleeing.

He said the attack threw the community into panic as residents scampered for safety.

The Berom Youth Moulders- Association, BYM, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident, saying the victim was attacked by gunmen.

According to the association, the circumstances surrounding the attack were still being investigated, adding that the incident was another in a series of attacks targeting innocent residents of Riyom Local Government Area.

“The Berom Youth Moulders Association has received the report of another fatal attack on a Berom native in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

“Information available to the association indicates that Mr Mangai Musa, 43, from Wereng-Rim community, was shot dead on the night of Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Efforts to obtain comments from the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful.
