APC chooses Gubio by unanimous decision as its Borno state gubernatorial flagbearer

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has formally introduced Mr Mustafa Gubio as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections to Vice President Kashim Shettima, according to a statement issued by the governor's spokesman, Mr Dauda Iliya, on Friday in Maiduguri.

The statement revealed that Governor Zulum made the presentation in Abuja on Thursday, explaining that Gubio's selection as the party's candidate resulted from extensive consultations with key stakeholders within the party.

During the presentation, Governor Zulum noted that the decision to choose Gubio reflects a unified stance within the party in the state, as quoted by his spokesman, Mr Dauda Iliya.

Additionally, the statement commended President Bola Tinubu's strategic leadership, acknowledging the support and guidance he has provided to the government and the APC, which has been unprecedented, according to Governor Zulum.

Governor Zulum expressed his deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his exceptional leadership and the immense support he has given to Borno State and the APC, saying he was instrumental in Gubio's emergence as the consensus candidate.

He also thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima for his role in strengthening party cohesion in the state and for backing the consensus candidate, according to the statement.

Governor Zulum further expressed his appreciation to the APC leadership at all levels, party stakeholders, and the state's residents for their support, as stated in the statement issued by his spokesman.

Previously, on Monday, Governor Zulum had presented Gubio as his preferred successor after purchasing the party's nomination and expression of interest forms for the 2027 governorship election under the APC platform.

Notable figures in attendance during the presentation of the consensus candidate included former Governor Maina Ma’aji Lawan, Zulum's deputy, Usman Kadafur, and APC Deputy National Chairman, Bukar Dalori.

Others present at the event were Senator Mohammed Monguno, Senator Ali Ndume, and Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, as well as the speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan.

The minister of agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, and Mr Abdulkadir Rahis were also among those who attended the presentation of the consensus candidate, as mentioned in the statement.
