Anglican Church takes disciplinary action against Anambra priest amid claims of fabricated spiritual healings

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has taken disciplinary action against Ifunaya Maduka, the Vicar of St. Paul's Parish in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, due to allegations of fabricating prophecies and miracles. This decision has resulted in a six-month suspension without pay for Maduka, citing behavior deemed unfit for an ordained priest.

A suspension letter issued by the Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, Owen Nwokolo, on April 27, 2026, outlined the reasons for the disciplinary action, including Maduka's alleged orchestration of staged prophecies using paid individuals to create the illusion of divine intervention.

According to the bishop's letter, Maduka admitted to his involvement in these practices when confronted with evidence, prompting serious concerns regarding false prophecy, deception of the faithful, and abuse of God's name, as well as potential fraud.

These allegations have been deemed inconsistent with the Anglican Church's doctrine, discipline, and ethical standards, and are seen as having damaged the church's reputation and eroded public trust.

As part of his suspension, Maduka has been instructed to surrender all church property, records, and funds in his possession to the People's Warden and to vacate the parish premises within a four-day period.

A disciplinary panel is set to be established within a month to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and determine any additional sanctions in accordance with church regulations.
