Anambra tears down notorious hub for narcotics and sex trade, detains 38 individuals

A significant operation was carried out by the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, in the Okpuno area of Awka, resulting in the demolition of a brothel and the apprehension of 38 individuals allegedly involved in prostitution and drug trafficking.

The breakdown of those arrested reveals that 20 were female commercial sex workers, while 18 were males, with roles including a manager, supervisor, bar attendant, and storekeeper.

The facility was described by operatives as a major hub for illicit activities, including the sale of prohibited substances and exploitation of individuals for sex.

During the raid, various items were seized, including Tramadol, Indian hemp, nitrous oxide, Rohypnol, and a locally made single-barreled short gun.

Paul Chibuike, the manager of the brothel, admitted to the sale of drugs on the premises but denied any knowledge of the firearm, stating that some of the sex workers were students who visited the centre on weekends for financial gain.

Chibuike further disclosed that he was overseeing the brothel on behalf of an employer who also owns another outlet selling drugs on Abakaliki Street, a well-known area for such activities in Awka.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, confirmed that the facility would be seized in accordance with the State Homeland Security Law 2025, following the incriminating findings.

As a consequence of the operation, the Anambra State Government proceeded to demolish the one-storey building that housed the brothel, marking a significant step in addressing the issue.
