Anambra charges eight individuals accused of posing as clergy members

The Anambra State Government has taken eight pastors into custody, charging them with violating the state's 2025 Homeland Security Law, following arrests made in various locations including Onitsha, Awka, and other parts of the state.

On Friday, the pastors were presented before a court at the state judiciary complex in Awka, marking a significant step in the prosecution process.

The list of defendants includes Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama, all of whom are facing charges related to the alleged violations.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, is spearheading the prosecution efforts on behalf of the government, overseeing the case against the accused pastors.

According to Mr. Ejimofor Opara, Media Adviser to the Anambra State Governor, the pastors in question are being described as “fake” and are being prosecuted for allegedly breaching provisions of the recently enacted security law.

The arraignment of the pastors is part of a broader crackdown by the state government on individuals accused of engaging in activities deemed harmful to public order and security, a campaign that has been ongoing in recent times.

In a similar vein, last year saw the arrest of several native doctors who were accused of promoting get-rich-quick practices, with some having been prosecuted and convicted, while others remain ongoing with their trials still in progress.
