The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is set to return for its 12th edition, with organisers promising a bigger and more inclusive celebration of African film and television.

The award ceremony is scheduled to hold on May 9, 2026, as part of a series of activities leading up to what is widely regarded as Africa’s most prestigious entertainment event.

Organisers officially flagged off the new edition on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during a press conference held at the MultiChoice Studio. The event brought together stakeholders across the creative industry to unveil plans for the upcoming awards.

Since its launch in 2013, the AMVCA has grown into a major platform for recognising excellence in African storytelling, while also contributing to the continent’s creative economy. According to organisers, the awards have created over 30,000 jobs across various sectors, including production, logistics, and technical services.

Speaking at the event, Atinuke Babatunde, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, said this year’s edition would place strong emphasis on recognising the behind-the-scenes contributors shaping African cinema.

She noted that beyond the glamour of the awards lies a deeper focus on craftsmanship, highlighting the roles of writers, directors, editors, designers, and technicians in building the industry.

The 12th edition will introduce new categories aimed at strengthening the awards’ pan-African appeal. These include Best Indigenous Language – North Africa and Best Indigenous Language – Central Africa, expanding recognition for diverse cultures and languages across the continent.

In total, 32 award categories will be featured, including 18 jury-decided categories, 11 public voting categories, and three special awards for Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer honours.

Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has been appointed Head Judge for this year’s edition, bringing decades of industry experience to the role.

The awards are headlined by Don Julio as lead sponsor, alongside other major sponsors including Guinness and MTN, among others.

Organisers also announced that the nominees for the 2026 edition will be revealed on March 29, during a live broadcast on Africa Magic channels. The announcement will be hosted by actor Chiemezie Imo.

The AMVCA continues to serve as a key platform for showcasing African talent, celebrating creativity, and promoting cultural expression across the continent.
