Amidst Rising Crime: Bwala Urges Nigerians to Exercise Their Right to Self-Defense

President Bola Tinubu's Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, asserts that Nigerians have the constitutional right to defend themselves against attackers, including in situations where their lives are under threat.

This statement was made by Bwala during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, as he responded to recent violent incidents, such as the killings in Esiele community in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the abduction of teachers and pupils at LA Primary School.

According to Bwala, the Nigerian Constitution guarantees citizens the right to self-defence, emphasizing that every citizen has the right to protect themselves from harm.

Bwala explained that when individual rights to self-defence are combined, they become collective rights, allowing Nigerians to defend themselves against threats, and citing the example of using lethal weapons to defend oneself in one's own home.

However, Bwala cautioned that the possession of firearms is still regulated by law, and while Nigerians do not have the right to bear certain arms without permission, collective groups can apply to the government for the right to coordinate their efforts.

Bwala noted that criminality is a global challenge, but he believes that collective action can help address it, and that the solution to insecurity lies in the collective participation of the people and the government working together.

He acknowledged that citizens will continue to express frustration and complain about recurring attacks, as the loss of life is a tragic consequence of the actions of evil individuals.

Bwala attributed the rising insecurity in Nigeria to factors such as election cycles and societal pressures, particularly the idea of a "crisis economy" that emerges on the eve of elections, including those in 2014, 2018, 2022, and the upcoming 2026 elections.

He also highlighted the importance of local vigilance groups and security collaboration, citing the example of vigilantes and paramilitary organizations in Borno State that provide intelligence to law enforcement agencies.
