American track sensation Richardson claims Australia's prestigious Stawell Gift with historic fastest-ever finish

Sha'Carri Richardson, the renowned US sprint star, made a remarkable comeback on Monday, claiming victory in Australia's esteemed Stawell Gift race with a record-breaking time.

The event, which takes place on a grassy 120m track with a slight incline in a rural town near Melbourne, features a unique handicap system, where athletes are assigned starting positions based on their form.

Richardson, the 2023 100m world champion and silver medalist in the 2024 Paris Olympics 100m sprint, demonstrated her exceptional skill by overtaking runners who had a head start of up to nine meters.

With a blistering time of 13.15 seconds, Richardson became only the third woman to win the race from scratch, starting at the back of the field.

In a post-race interview, Richardson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "The race was phenomenal," and highlighted her focus on executing her coach Dennis Mitchell's strategy.

Richardson also noted that she had been working on developing new techniques with her coach, and the Stawell Gift race provided an ideal opportunity to showcase them.

Despite initial uncertainty about competing on a grass track, Richardson found the experience to be a positive indicator for the upcoming season, emphasizing that every race is a valuable opportunity to perform.

Her boyfriend, Christian Coleman, who holds the 60m indoor world record, started from scratch but unfortunately failed to advance beyond the semi-finals, having conceded a significant margin of 5.25m to his closest competitor.

Coleman reflected on his performance, saying, "Giving up that much of a margin over 120, it is what it is, but I had fun," and seemed to take his defeat in stride.

Australian athlete Olufemi Komolafe secured the top spot in the men's final, crossing the finish line in an impressive 12.03 seconds.

The Stawell Gift is Australia's oldest sprint race, with a rich history dating back to the gold rush era in the region, and has been held annually since 1878, with the exception of four years during World War II and one year during the Covid pandemic.
