American financial officials impose penalties on Iranian regime leaders controlling key waterway

The United States Treasury unveiled sanctions on Wednesday targeting Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a newly established agency responsible for collecting fees from vessels traversing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the Iranian military's latest maneuver to extort funds from global maritime trade underscores the desperation of the regime, which he attributed to the impact of Economic Fury.

The Treasury Secretary warned that individuals or entities paying these fees may inadvertently be supporting Iran's Revolutionary Guards, thereby exposing themselves to the risk of sanctions.

Secretary Bessent emphasized that the Treasury has successfully deprived the Iranian regime of significant revenue, totaling tens of billions of dollars, which would have otherwise been allocated to weapons programs, terrorist proxies, and nuclear ambitions.

In a statement, Bessent highlighted the US government's efforts to disrupt the flow of revenue to Tehran, which has been hindered from accessing substantial funds.

On May 20, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority published a map on X, delineating its regulatory jurisdiction and marking red lines on both sides of the Strait of Hormuz, which require authorization from Iran for passage.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place between US and Iranian forces since April 8, as diplomats strive for a negotiated settlement, yet Iran has tightened its grip on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the US to launch recent strikes against Iranian targets.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, asserted on Monday that Tehran will persist in managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which 20 percent of the world's oil and natural gas transits.

Baqaei maintained that the fees collected by Iran are intended for navigational services, rather than tolls, as the country seeks to exert control over the strategic strait.

The ongoing conflict commenced on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched an attack on the Islamic republic, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks across the region.
