Amaechi Formally Throws Support Behind ADC in 2027

Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, officially became a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after completing his registration at Ward 8 in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Friday morning.

The registration took place following an arson attack on the ADC's office in the community, which was set ablaze by unknown individuals in the early hours of the same day, causing panic among residents and damaging a section of the party office.

No arrests had been made by the time of Amaechi's registration, leaving the perpetrators of the blaze at large.

Amaechi addressed a crowd of supporters who gathered to welcome him, urging them to remain calm and refrain from seeking revenge or engaging in disorderly conduct.

In his remarks, Amaechi cautioned his loyalists against violence, stating "Don't be violent because violence may lead to the death of somebody — don't be violent," and emphasized the importance of being able to assemble peacefully in their community.

Amaechi expressed appreciation for the professionalism displayed by security operatives deployed to the area, specifically praising the state commissioner of police and the director of the Department of State Services.

He commended the commissioner of police and the director of DSS, saying "We thank the commissioner of police and the director of DSS; they showed a lot of professionalism," and admitted that their impartiality was unexpected.

Amaechi called on security agencies to promptly identify and prosecute those responsible for the arson attack, warning that such acts of intimidation would not hinder the party's activities in the area.

The former Governor's defection to the ADC is seen as a significant boost for the opposition party, which is working to increase its national presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
