Imagine, for a moment, that there was no airline called Air Peace. Imagine that one man didn’t dare to conquer the skies.

Imagine thousands of Nigerians travelling to Abuja, Owerri, Enugu, Benin, Port Harcourt, Kano and several other destinations, forced onto long, dangerous highways. Imagine students stranded by prohibitive airfares, with nowhere to turn. Imagine entrepreneurs missing business opportunities because connectivity failed them. Imagine a nation of over 200 million people relying almost entirely on foreign airlines to reach the wider world.

Pause. Reflect

Then celebrate the man who refused to let that be Nigeria’s reality: Dr. Allen Ifechukwu Onyema, CON, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace Limited. As he marks another year, he stands tall as a man whose life has been defined by courage, enterprise, patriotism, and uncommon national service.

Venturing into an industry where many believed a wholly Nigerian airline could neither dominate nor endure, Onyema did something extraordinary. He did not merely build an airline; he built a symbol of confidence – a bold statement of national capability and a flying testament that Nigerians can compete at the highest levels of global aviation.

When Air Peace commenced operations on October 24, 2014, with just seven aircraft, skeptics predicted turbulence. Eleven years later, history has delivered a different verdict.

Today, the airline stands as Nigeria’s largest and the biggest carrier in West and Central Africa, operating a modern fleet of about 38 aircraft. Its Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300 aircraft power long-haul international routes. Its Boeing 737 fleet links major domestic and regional destinations, while Embraer 145 and Embraer 190 jets efficiently service shorter sectors. Ten brand-new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft already paid for and awaiting delivery, underscoring a bold and forward-looking expansion strategy.

This is not incremental growth.

It is strategic expansion driven by vision, discipline, and entrepreneurial ingenuity of one man: Ide Mbosi.

On March 30, 2024, Air Peace made aviation history by launching direct Lagos–London Gatwick flights, breaking a decades-long stranglehold of exorbitant fares on the Nigeria–United Kingdom route. For the first time in years, Nigerians experienced real competition and more affordable travel options.

The airline expanded that footprint on October 26, 2025, with direct Abuja–London Heathrow flights, followed by Abuja–London Gatwick services effectively opening up three direct routes between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

What once seemed improbable became operational reality.

n

Students rejoiced at discounted fares. Families found relief in accessible travel. Businesses gained efficiency. Trade and tourism received a boost. Thousands of Nigerians found employment across the aviation value chain.

But beyond the numbers lies something deeper: Nigeria regained belief in itself. This is the summary of of Dr. Onyema’s audacious venture into aviation.

What many may not fully appreciate is that Onyema’s story did not begin with aviation; it began with peace.

n

A pan-Nigerian and deeply nationalistic businessman, Onyema has long been committed to peace advocacy, youth empowerment, and national unity. His journey into this space dates back to his student days at the University of Ibadan, where he studied law.

n

It was there that his passion for peace-building first found expression. Disturbed by ethno-religious violence, he led a group of students to Zaria, Kaduna State, to help quell a raging crisis. That experience led to the formation of the Eminent Friends’ Group, an organisation dedicated to promoting ethnic harmony across Nigeria.

Born in Benin City, Edo State to Michael and Helen Onyema, the first of nine children, Allen Onyema traces his roots to Mbosi in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. With his law degree he combined legal training with entrepreneurial daring.

His marriage in 1993 to Alice Ojochida Onyema (née Ejembi) ushered in a stable family life that has remained his anchor through seasons of challenge and triumph.

n

Those who know him attest that sleep is often secondary. For Onyema, safety is non-negotiable. He monitors operations closely, questioning, reviewing, and insisting on global best practice.

n

Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989, Onyema began his legal career before founding Onyema & Co and venturing into real estate. Yet, even with success in business, his passion for peace remained undiminished.

n

He went on to establish the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria, FEHN, using it as a platform to champion non-violence and conflict resolution across the country.

n

In 2005, he deepened his expertise by undergoing professional training in Non-violent Conflict Management at the University of Rhode Island, earning multiple certifications. He later obtained a Certificate in Non-violence Leadership from Emory University in the United States.

n

When militancy in the Niger Delta reached crisis levels, Onyema stepped in, risking his life to engage militants directly. Remarkably, he trained over 30,000 youths without a single incident of violence. His interventions extended to the North through the Arewa Transformation and Empowerment Initiative, aimed at reorienting young people.

Perhaps one of his most remarkable interventions came in 2017, when he brought together agitators from across Nigeria: Arewa, IPOB, and OPC, for a non-violence training programme in Lagos. For a moment, groups divided by deep mistrust found common ground.

That effort alone reportedly cost him over N300 million.

n

This is a man for whom peace is not theory; it is practice.

n

If Onyema’s peace work speaks to his philosophy, his actions during national emergencies speak to his patriotism.

n

In 2019, he personally funded the evacuation of over 500 Nigerians from South Africa during xenophobic attacks.

n

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Air Peace aircraft were deployed for repatriation missions. The airline also evacuated Nigerians during the Ukraine war and the Sudan crisis.

n

In 2025, he once again demonstrated compassion by airlifting trafficked Nigerian women from Côte d’Ivoire, offering not just transport, but dignity, care, and hope.

In those moments, Air Peace became more than an airline.

n

It became a lifeline.

n

Today, Onyema is investing in a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul, MRO, facility in Lagos – an ambitious project that promises to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign maintenance, conserve foreign exchange, and create skilled jobs.

It is a strategic move that could position Nigeria as a regional aviation hub.

Beyond aviation, his contributions to sports, youth development, and corporate social responsibility are equally noteworthy. From sponsoring football teams to supporting national teams and honouring Nigerian heroes.

For his contributions, Onyema has received numerous national and international honours, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Global Award of Excellence, multiple honorary doctorates, and the National Productivity Order of Merit Award.

Through turbulence and triumph, scrutiny and celebration, Allen Ifechukwu Onyema has remained steady, proving that courage, conviction, and competence can rewrite a nation’s story.

Today, Air Peace connects Nigeria to the world, confidently, competitively, and proudly Nigerian. In many ways, it serves as the country’s flag carrier in all but name.

As he marks another year, we celebrate not just his age, but his altitude. Not just his birthday, but his impact.

For true success is not measured by wealth alone, but by value created and lives touched.
