Akpabio administers oaths of office to four newly elected lawmakers following recent polls

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday swore in four newly elected senators following their victories in recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The new lawmakers are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Rivers South East; Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Nasarawa North; Ikeje Asogwu of the APC, representing Enugu North; and Dayo Faduyile of the APC, representing Ondo South.

Their inauguration followed the bye-elections held last Saturday to fill vacancies in the four senatorial districts.

INEC declared the Rivers South East seat vacant following the death of Barinada Mpigi, paving the way for Nwogu’s election.

Anza emerged as senator for Nasarawa North following the death of Godiya Akwaashiki, while Asogwu succeeded the late Okechukwu Ezea. Faduyile’s emergence followed the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to the four senators during plenary.

Congratulating the lawmakers, Akpabio described the Senate as “a family of the most elite club in the world” and welcomed them to the Red Chamber.

He urged the new senators to remain focused on advancing national development, stressing that they now represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria rather than their political parties.

The Senate President also advised them to study the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders, as amended in 2023, to effectively discharge their legislative responsibilities.

Among dignitaries present at the swearing-in ceremony were Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, among others.
