Airstrike by US and Israel near Iranian atomic facility results in one fatality

A deadly projectile strike, attributed to a US-Israeli attack, occurred near Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant on Saturday, resulting in the loss of one life, as reported by state media, while also prompting a warning from the foreign minister regarding potential future attacks on the facility.

The attack marked the fourth incident targeting the area since the onset of the conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, as stated by the official IRNA news agency.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant is situated in southern Iran, along the Gulf coast, a strategic location that underscores the significance of the facility.

According to IRNA, the projectile struck the area near the Bushehr nuclear power plant at approximately 8:30 am on Saturday, with the agency stating that "following the US-Zionist criminal attacks, this Saturday morning, a projectile hit the area near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the southwest).

The incident resulted in the death of one of the facility's guards, although fortunately, no damage was inflicted upon the plant itself, as noted by IRNA.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi subsequently cautioned that continued attacks on the site could potentially lead to radioactive fallout, warning that this could have devastating consequences, including "end life in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) capitals, not Tehran".nn

No increase in radiation levels was detected in the aftermath of Saturday's strike, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The agency's chief, Rafael Grossi, urged "maximum military restraint to avoid risk of a nuclear accident", as stated in a post by the agency on X, emphasizing the need for caution in the region.
