Honest Ahanor, the 18-year-old Atalanta centre-back, has expressed his desire to represent Italy at the senior international level, opting against playing for Nigeria, the country of his parents' origin, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Ahanor's impressive performance with the Bergamo-based Serie A side has earned him his first call-up to Italy's U-21 squad, where he will face North Macedonia and Sweden in upcoming friendlies.

Having made 28 appearances for Atalanta this season, Ahanor has contributed one goal, following his transfer from Genoa last summer in a deal worth €16m, with an additional €4m in potential bonuses.

His league debut against Juventus in September 2024 marked the beginning of a consistently strong defensive presence, which has been maintained throughout the season.

Speaking at his first press conference in the Azzuri's camp, Ahanor conveyed his excitement at the call-up, describing the experience of wearing the Italian jersey as "indescribable".

Ahanor emphasized the significance of representing his country, stating that it is a "powerful feeling" that makes all sacrifices worthwhile, and one that is deeply connected to his sense of identity and belonging.

The Italian-born defender, with Nigerian parents, also underscored the importance of focus in the forthcoming fixtures, warning against underestimating any opponent, regardless of their perceived strength or weakness.

Ahanor noted that every point matters in European qualification, and that the team must take to the field with the right mentality, a concept that the coach has been emphasizing.

Ahanor's decision to commit to Italy follows a period during which he was registered as a Nigerian due to immigration regulations, but he became eligible to represent Italy at the senior level after turning 18 in February.

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso had previously cited the absence of an Italian passport as a reason for Ahanor's exclusion, but this issue has since been resolved, with Ahanor switching his registration accordingly.

Despite being eligible, Ahanor was not included in the national team for the March World Cup play-offs, and Nigeria had reportedly attempted to convince him to commit to playing for the Super Eagles at the senior level.

However, Ahanor appears resolute in his ambition to represent Italy, indicating a clear preference for the Azzuri over the Super Eagles at the senior international level.
