African Democratic Congress urges Federal Government to impose price controls on fuel as economic struggles intensify

Abuja – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Federal Government to introduce an immediate, temporary cap on petrol prices, warning that rising fuel costs are increasing the cost of living for millions of Nigerians.

In a statement on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the request was prompted by continued increases in petrol prices, which have affected transportation, food prices, and household expenses across the country.

“Petrol prices determine the cost of everyday goods and services. When fuel prices rise, other costs rise with them. We urge the Federal Government to take urgent action to stabilise prices and provide targeted support for low-income households,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC also raised concerns about the Federal Government’s plan to distribute 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits as part of its alternative fuel strategy. The party noted that, given Nigeria’s fleet of more than 11 million vehicles, the initiative would reach only a small fraction of motorists and highlighted limited availability of CNG refuelling stations as a potential challenge.

The party called for a long-term approach to energy policy that goes beyond temporary measures, stressing the need for scalable solutions to Nigeria’s energy challenges.

“While external factors affect global fuel markets, domestic policies must ensure that ordinary Nigerians are protected from undue economic hardship,” Abdullahi added.
