African Democratic Congress senate hopeful calls for enhanced safety measures following fatal violence in Otukpo

Dr David Olofu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate for Benue South Senatorial District, is calling on governments at all levels to bolster security measures in vulnerable communities, particularly in the wake of renewed attacks in Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA).

Olofu's plea came on Sunday as he responded to the early morning attacks on Apachi and Otukpo-Nobi communities in Okete District, which were allegedly perpetrated by suspected armed herdsmen.

The senatorial candidate lamented the recurring attacks on communities throughout the senatorial district, urging security agencies to redouble their efforts to protect lives and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Olofu characterized the attacks as premeditated acts of aggression, emphasizing the need for decisive action to secure communities and safeguard human lives.

He extended his sympathy to the families of the victims, offering prayers for the repose of those killed and comfort for the bereaved.

Meanwhile, Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Mr Maxwell Ogiri, revealed that the latest attack followed the killing of two farmers in Apachi village on Friday.

Ogiri informed journalists that the bodies of the two victims were recovered and buried on Saturday after community members conducted a search of the area.

He explained that residents had remained vigilant, combing nearby bushes after the incident, but were caught off guard when gunmen launched an attack on Otukpo-Nobi at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Ogiri stated that youths in the area protested the killings by taking the bodies of some victims to the palace of the Och’Idoma.

According to Ogiri, efforts are being made to calm the youths and prevent them from taking their anger out on innocent passers-by, as their initial reactions are difficult to control when people are apprehensive and afraid.

Ogiri reported that 10 persons had been killed in the latest wave of attacks, consisting of two victims killed on Friday in Apachi and eight others killed in Sunday's attack on Otukpo-Nobi.

He added that several other persons sustained injuries, while survivors have been relocated to safer locations, and security has been reinforced in the area.
