In the world of sports, the final whistle is often seen as the ultimate arbiter, determining the outcome of a contest and cementing its place in history. However, there have been instances where governing bodies have intervened after the fact, overturning the results and rewriting the narrative.

The latest example of this phenomenon occurred at the AFCON 2025 Final, where Senegal's initial victory was revoked due to disciplinary action stemming from a walk-off incident, with Morocco being awarded a 3–0 win instead.

One notable instance of a championship title being overturned is the 2000 Sydney Olympics Women’s 4x400m Relay, where the USA was stripped of its gold medal following the doping scandal involving Marion Jones.

The aftermath of this scandal saw the US team's victory nullified, and the title reassigned, marking a significant disqualification in Olympic history.

Another example is the 2004 Athens Olympics Men’s Shot Put, where Ukrainian shot putter Yuriy Bilonog's initial victory was invalidated years later after a positive doping retest, resulting in the gold medal being awarded to another athlete.

The retest and subsequent reassignment of the gold medal highlighted the lasting impact of anti-doping reviews on athletic competitions.

The CAF Champions League 2019 Final is another case where the title was decided after the final had been abandoned, due to a VAR dispute that halted play between Esperance and Wydad Casablanca.

CAF initially ordered a replay but later reversed this decision, awarding the title to Esperance and effectively settling the outcome off the pitch.

The 2012 London Olympics Women’s 4x400m Relay also saw a reshuffling of medals, as Jamaica's women's team was elevated from bronze to silver after Russia was stripped of its silver medal due to a doping violation by Antonina Krivoshapka.

This decision, announced by the International Olympic Committee, further underscored the potential for doping cases to alter the outcome of competitions long after the initial event.
