Aba's textile and footwear sector has potential to rival oil revenue, says Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, believes that the garment and footwear industry in Aba, Abia State, could generate revenue comparable to Nigeria's oil earnings if properly managed and supported.

Obi shared his thoughts on the industry's potential in a statement posted on his X platform on Sunday, following his visit to Aba, where he met with stakeholders of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday at the invitation of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

During his visit, Obi commended Senator Abaribe and his team for the warm reception he received, and also praised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his efforts in developing Aba, also known as Enyimba City.

Obi participated in a one-hour interview on Magic FM, marking his first appearance on radio and television this year, and expressed appreciation for the productive engagement with ADC members.

Obi emphasized the need for Nigeria to transition from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one, highlighting Aba's economic potential as a major hub for garment and shoe production.

He noted that countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam have successfully earned significant foreign exchange from their garment and footwear industries, and that Nigeria could replicate this success with strategic investment and proper management.

Obi stated that garments and shoes can earn as much as oil does for some countries, and that Nigeria could achieve similar results if these industries are well supported.

He identified competent leadership as a critical factor in unlocking the country's economic potential, emphasizing the need for governance that is marked by capacity, compassion, and commitment to national development.

Obi concluded by reaffirming his belief in the country's future, saying "A new Nigeria is possible".
