2027: Tinubu Directs Appointees with Election Ambitions to Step Down by March 31st Deadline

President Bola Tinubu has instructed all political appointees in his administration who plan to run for elective offices in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions by March 31, 2026, at the latest.

This directive, which applies to ministers, agency heads, and aides, aims to ensure that the government adheres to the country's laws and maintains the integrity of the upcoming electoral process.

A circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation explains that the directive is based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Independent National Electoral Commission's timetable for party primaries.

The circular, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. George Akume and released by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, specifies that the resignation requirement applies to a wide range of officials, including ministers, special advisers, and senior special assistants.

These officials include Honourable Ministers, Honourable Ministers of State, Special Advisers to the President, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, and Personal Assistants to the President, as well as Directors-General and Chief Executive Officers of Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, Commissions, and Government-owned Companies.

President Tinubu has stated that this measure is necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws, maintain transparency in the political process, and provide a level playing field for all candidates ahead of the elections.

The directive, which was communicated by Dewan Nengak Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations for the OSGF, requires affected officials to submit their formal resignation letters to the SGF's office by March 31, 2026.

By enforcing this deadline, the administration hopes to prevent the misuse of public office and resources to gain an unfair advantage during party primaries.
