2027: SDP Vows to Confront Corruption, Insecurity and Poverty Directly, Says Adebayo

Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party for the 2027 general elections, has pledged to tackle corruption, insecurity, and poverty head-on if elected president, believing that Nigeria can reclaim its lost greatness through credible leadership and people-oriented governance.

Adebayo stated that the SDP remains committed to the ideals that led to its victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, also known as MKO Abiola, ahead of the 2027 polls.

He expressed his honour at leading the party into the 2027 elections, noting that the SDP has consistently adhered to its founding principles since its formation, and that he has been a member of the party since 1991.

Adebayo lamented the growing crisis within opposition parties, accusing many politicians of prioritising defections and political survival over the welfare of Nigerians, and stated that the SDP stands apart due to its unity, ideology, and determination to rescue Nigeria from bad governance.

The SDP candidate accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration of failing to address the nation's economic and security challenges, resulting in the country being trapped in a cycle of hardship and stagnation.

Adebayo identified corruption, insecurity, and poverty as the three biggest obstacles to Nigeria's progress, and noted that corruption has become a major economic burden that deprives Nigerians of development and prosperity.

He stated that every naira stolen into private pockets is a hospital not staffed, a road not built, a military not equipped, or poverty not addressed, and that Nigeria's poverty is not due to a lack of resources, but rather the mismanagement of public wealth by the political elite.

Adebayo promised that an SDP government would launch immediate and aggressive anti-corruption reforms from its first day in office, with no delays or excuses, and that the party would strengthen anti-corruption institutions, enforce transparency in governance, and unveil comprehensive reforms in the coming months.

On insecurity, Adebayo said that successive governments have failed Nigerians, particularly communities in Northern Nigeria ravaged by terrorism, banditry, and violent attacks, and that the party would prioritise the welfare of military personnel and security agencies through improved funding, intelligence gathering, infrastructure, and better remuneration.

He argued that military action alone would not solve insecurity, and that poverty, neglect, and underdevelopment are fuelling violence across many parts of the country, and that the party would implement massive development programmes in Northern Nigeria through investments in education, healthcare, roads, and water infrastructure.

Adebayo advocated for greater decentralisation and empowerment of sub-national governments, stating that regional authorities are better positioned to understand and address local challenges, and that the party would give regional governments real power and resources to address the issues affecting their people.

On the economy, the SDP flag bearer promised to pursue large-scale foreign direct investment, particularly in sectors capable of driving long-term economic growth, and that Nigeria possesses the population, resources, and youthful energy needed to emerge as a global economic power if properly managed.

Adebayo maintained that restoring confidence in governance would attract investors and unlock Nigeria's economic potential, and that investment follows trust, once corruption is tackled and governance becomes credible, Nigeria will begin to attract the opportunities it deserves.

He expressed confidence that the SDP could once again emerge victorious at the national level, recalling the party's historical role in Nigeria's democratic evolution, and stated that the SDP has won before and it can win again, with the work beginning now.
