2027: Okonkwo vows intense efforts to secure ADC presidential ticket for Obi

As the 2027 general elections draw near, with political activities gaining pace, Harris Okonkwo, the House of Representatives member for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, has voiced his conviction that Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, will secure the African Democratic Congress's presidential ticket.

Okonkwo made this statement while speaking to journalists in Ojoto, where the Annie Okonkwo Foundation had organised a medical outreach for his constituency's residents.

Having recently defected from the Labour Party to the ADC, the federal lawmaker affirmed that he and his supporters will work tirelessly to ensure Obi emerges as the party's presidential candidate, driven by his belief that Nigerians are capable of making informed decisions.

Okonkwo noted that the upcoming primaries will be decided by either consensus or direct primaries, thereby allowing the people to choose their preferred presidential candidate, as there will be no delegates involved in the process.

The lawmaker criticised certain provisions in the recently amended Electoral Act, arguing that they infringe upon the freedom of association, a right that should remain unrestricted.

Okonkwo expressed his disagreement with the amended law, stating that although it may prevent individuals from belonging to multiple parties, it should not limit their ability to support candidates from other parties.

He emphasized that individuals should be free to support any candidate of their choice, regardless of their party affiliation, as this is an inherent right that should not be restricted.

Okonkwo also voiced his concern over the government's management of national resources, urging leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens and address the issue of extravagance at the expense of the people.

He believes that ultimately, the truth will prevail, and the government's management of resources will be held to account, with the welfare of citizens being the primary focus.
