ABUJA — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has launched a ₦22 million water project in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), starting with a solar-powered borehole in New Jerusalem, a densely populated community in Bwari Area Council.

The initiative highlights the ongoing need for basic services in underserved communities and the growing efforts by political actors to address such gaps at the grassroots.

Hashim commissioned the project over the weekend alongside party leaders, including FCT PDP Chairman Ismail Mohammed Dogara, ward officials, and community representatives.

“This project is aimed at addressing the persistent water shortage affecting residents of this area,” Hashim said. He added that the intervention is part of a broader multi-million-naira plan covering similar projects across all six FCT area councils, with work already underway in other underserved communities.

The initiative is being implemented through the Gbenga Hashim Foundation, which focuses on improving living conditions in neglected rural and peri-urban areas, particularly for vulnerable populations. Hashim also revealed plans to extend the foundation’s outreach to northern states affected by insecurity and displacement.

He urged residents to take ownership of the facility to ensure it is properly used and maintained for the benefit of current and future generations.

Hashim criticised years of neglect by successive governments, noting that many communities across Nigeria still lack basic services such as potable water, good roads, and healthcare. He highlighted other foundation interventions, including road construction, educational support programmes, and ICT training for youth. One beneficiary of the foundation’s training programmes has become one of Nigeria’s youngest female state legislators, demonstrating the impact of sustained investment in human capital.

Residents of New Jerusalem welcomed the project, noting that it would ease daily water challenges while improving sanitation and public health in the community.
