2027 Elections: Insiders Suggest Obasa Might Opt for a House of Representatives Position

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has dropped his bid for the governorship, and is now poised to run for the House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.

Initially, Obasa had aspired to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and had strengthened his statewide political influence through the revitalization of the Mandate Group, a legacy structure linked to President Bola Tinubu.

This move was intended to solidify support among both veteran and new loyalists of the president, while establishing Obasa as a strong contender for the governorship, according to information gathered.

However, sources within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos revealed that Obasa shifted his focus after President Tinubu, in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council, chose Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate for the governorship.

Following this development, it was learned that Obasa redirected his attention to the Lagos West Senatorial District, with plans to challenge the incumbent senator, Senator Idiat Adebule, who is also a former deputy governor.

Obasa's interest in the senatorial seat gained momentum amid internal party considerations to field him as the APC's candidate for the district, according to APC sources.

However, the move was met with resistance from the APC's national leadership and its women's wing, who advocated for Adebule's retention, citing her importance as the only female senator from the South-West geopolitical zone.

President Tinubu advised Obasa to pursue a seat in the House of Representatives instead, sources within the APC fold revealed.

Specifically, Obasa was directed to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency, currently represented by first-term lawmaker Dr Wale Ahmed, according to sources.

Obasa has begun discreet mobilization efforts within Agege, rallying grassroots support for his new objective, sources further hinted.

This development marks a significant shift, particularly as Obasa had previously endorsed Mr Egunjobi for the Agege Federal Constituency seat before the latest realignment.
