South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has called upon his teammates to maintain their confidence in the team's World Cup campaign, despite the 2-0 loss to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.

The Bafana Bafana faced a challenging evening at the packed Estadio Azteca, where they conceded an early goal to Julian Quinones, and later Raul Jimenez secured the win for the hosts in the second half, resulting in a difficult outcome for the visiting team.

South Africa finished the match with only nine players on the field, following the ejections of Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, which further complicated their situation.

Reflecting on the defeat, Williams acknowledged that South Africa's strategy was disrupted by the early goal conceded, stating that conceding a goal within the first 20 minutes was not part of their plan.

Williams expressed, "You don't want to concede in the first 20 minutes, and that's what exactly happened," and added, "We wanted to sit up, the nerves, the anxiety, obviously, at this level, you make a mistake, they punish you."

Despite the setback, the goalkeeper commended his teammates for their determination and fighting spirit throughout the encounter, highlighting their efforts to get into the game and put the opposing team on the break.

Williams stated, "We got into the game, put them on the break, but our final passes let us down," and further said, "There are lots of lessons to take, I am proud of the boys, the efforts, they didn’t stop, they kept fighting."

The South African captain emphasized the importance of quickly learning from their mistakes as they prepare for the remainder of their Group A campaign, urging his teammates not to give up.

Williams added, "Now is to analyse our mistakes, and not give up, there are still two games to play and we must believe," as the team looks to bounce back from the defeat.
