He noted that limited financial resources had hindered the execution of many of these projects and warned that failure to extend the implementation window could lead to widespread project abandonment.rnrnThis is the second time the Senate has granted such an extension. The first came in response to a December 2024 request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who asked for the deadline to be moved from December 31, 2024, to June 30, 2025, citing the need to finish ongoing capital projects and maximize the impact of budgetary allocations. Both chambers of the National Assembly approved that request after robust deliberation.rnrnrnHowever, as the June 30 deadline neared, it became clear that many projects remained unfinished, prompting lawmakers to approve a further extension to December 31, 2025.rnrnAs a result, Nigeria is now simultaneously running two budgets—the extended 2024 capital budget and the newly active 2025 fiscal plan.rnrnWhile critics argue that these repeated extensions highlight inefficiencies within government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), proponents believe the move ensures better project delivery and prevents waste of public funds through abandoned initiatives.
