The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Senator David Mark, has lambasted the ruling All Progressives Congress, labeling it the most significant threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria, a stance he took during a reception in Kano.
This reception was held to welcome Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and a heavyweight in Nigerian politics, into the ADC, a move Mark described as a deliberate response to the call for unity among opposition leaders to protect Nigeria's democratic space.
Mark characterized the day of the reception as a pivotal moment in Nigeria's democracy, emphasizing that the unity of opposition forces is crucial, not just as a political party, but as a collective effort to make the country more inclusive and better for all its citizens.
According to Mark, Kwankwaso's decision to join the ADC is a direct response to the need for opposition leaders to present a unified front against the totalitarian tendencies that threaten the nation's democratic fabric.
Mark accused the APC of attempting to undermine opposition parties and consolidate power, warning that such actions pose a significant threat to the country's multiparty system, edging it perilously close to becoming a one-party state.
He reiterated that the APC represents the most significant threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria, emphasizing that limiting participation in the democratic process is a direct attack on the principles of democracy, and Nigerians must have the freedom to choose.
The ADC, according to Mark, is positioned as a rallying point for a new national movement founded on the principles of inclusion, integrity, competence, and progress, with a focus on empowering ordinary Nigerians rather than relying on coercion to govern.
Mark extended an invitation to all Nigerians, regardless of their background, to join the ADC in its mission to create a nation where leadership is accountable and every voice is heard, urging people to put aside their differences and unite to rescue Nigeria's democracy.
The significance of Kwankwaso's move to the ADC was underscored by the thousands of his supporters who attended the reception, highlighting the growing momentum of the opposition coalition.
